Athfest 2013: Rockin' the noise at the Caledonia with National Anthem and Powder Room

Saturday, June 22nd, 2013
 National Anthem
Powder Room
Hot Breath

The madness at the Caledonia on Athfest Saturday was just beginning.  Since the lineup that night looked positively incredible, I made myself comfortable at the venue and settled in for an evening of thunderous noise rock.  Hot Breath was up first, and they definitely fit the bill as far as decibels were concerned.  These masters of doom headbanged their way through a set rife with screaming garage rock and heavy sound.

Then National Anthem, a band I've been dying to see for quite a while, took the stage.  Throwing themselves energetically into an insane set of instrumental rock, these guys had the crowd with them from the very beginning.  Jace Bartet, best known as the member of Reptar who went totally hardcore and rocked his way through a monstrous face wound at last year's Athfest, brought the same famous enthusiasm to the table in this set.  And wow, the band's talent was purely incredible.  Every tune twisted through soundscapes with wild abandon, never veering off course but always venturing into the realm of the unexpected.  Often a solely instrumental band feels like it is lacking a singer, but in National Anthem's case, the music spoke for itself.  Several other members of Reptar were going crazy for their style in the front row, and they certainly weren't the only ones.  Fans packed into the venue, diving straight into their fun sound, and I was about ready to declare this band one of my new top favorites.  Of course, continuing my streak of having rather terrible luck with picking favorites, almost immediately after I made this decision, the band announced that this was actually going to be their final show.  Oh so tragic!  I've gotta to say though, even if it was their last, I'm so pumped I got to hear them before the end.  This, you guys, was one of the very best!

Up next, Powder Room, quite possibly the loudest of the bunch, followed with a serving of their darkly melodic trance noise. Drum beats shook the fans to their cores as the band's yells echoed in their ears.  The crowd responded with almost animal joy, going nuts for those up onstage. Then, as is fitting for a night of the loudest of rock, top favorite band Bambara finished out my Caledonia spree with what can only be described as a thrilling explosion of metaphorical death.

Truly, it was an unforgettable ear-blasting evening!

Echoreview: BAMBARA's DREAMVIOLENCE

BAMBARA's back, you guys.  From Athens, Georgia to Brooklyn, New York, these guys have made a name for themselves in the noise rock scene.  Since their emergence several years ago, they've blasted eardrums across the country with their rampant, unpredictable melodies and pounding rhythm.  DREAMVIOLENCE, their first full-length album in almost five years, delves even deeper into the wild, haunted darkness they've made their own.  So what's the word on this upcoming release?

An awesome driving baseline and a varied tempo make All The Same, one of my newer favorites of the band's tunes that I recognized from their live show, a righteous beginning to the album.  Listening to it, I immediately felt as if I had arrived at an ancient Aztec temple in the heart of a rainforest, populated with creepy, almost inhuman voices.  White Dresses follows this track with monstrous, underlying tones of horror that continue throughout the record.

Free of inhibitions, with a wildly strong and intensely sexy beat, Bird Calls reveals itself among explosions of noise.  Then the deliciously dark Hawk Bones, probably my favorite track on the album and certainly one I've enjoyed from their live shows, bursts on the scene with a sound that transports me into the throne room of a party king.

After the echoing jaunt of Young Mother and the untempered and jarring Nail Polish, Train Daze rolls in with a softer edge, charging through the pitch black tunnels of the darkest places in the mind. Then Bar jumps on board, an almost upbeat track compared to the rest of the album.  A strange and not entirely cohesive pause in the record, this tune features an eerie thread running through a more standard alt rock melody.

Structure is largely abandoned in the later tracks, the screeching and mechanical Divine Teeth, the smoky Z, the melodically metallic and angry Breaker, and the hauntingly animalistic Blonde. However, these songs fulfill the ongoing nightmarish premise of the album with their wildly erratic styles and borderless explorations of noise. Then, with a villainous whisper and a crash of finality, Disappear provides a fitting end to the record.

Throughout the album, BAMBARA's sound never ceases to be evocative.  It transports the listener through time and space in a haze of color and destruction not bound by the constraints of reality and expectation.  Rather than conform their style to the audience, with each album release they instead venture further into the uncharted soundscape to establish new bounds of explosive rock and eerie melodic noise.

Pumped to get your hands on DREAMVIOLENCE?  BAMBARA's official release date for the album is April 30th, but you can let your ears in on a taste of their sound over at Spin.com where they are currently streaming a preview of the full record.  Enjoy!

Athfest 2012: Bambara and Life Coach blast us with sound

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012
Bambara and Life Coach

So how did this blog's favorite noise rockers Bambara do at Athfest 2012? Oh, they sucked.  Just kidding, you guys! Of course, they were awesome as always. After they ironed out a few technical issues (I've always felt that they sound their best indoors rather than outdoors where they played this year), they gave us the show we all desired. With the pure manic force of their performance, Bambara absorbed all sound in the world and then shot it back out at us in a blast of pure distorted essence. It was a beautiful assault of every one of our senses, no doubt, but it was all too short. Despite bassist William's claims that the band's set was actually longer than usual, those of us in the crowd were left desperately craving for more. Luckily, though, it seems we'll only have to wait a few more weeks for them to return: they'll be rockin' at Little King's annual Slopfest this year on July 21st, with heavy-hitters Manray no less.

And speaking of luck, I was quite happy to find the band Life Coach up next as well.  I had never actually seen them before this, though their name sounded rather familiar to me.  After a bit of research, I realized that I had just missed catching them a couple of months ago, so the time was ripe to see them in action this go around.  I've gotta say, I liked what I heard.  Pairing them with Bambara was a quite a genius move as they had a similar eardrum-bursting, rock sound.  I definitely hope I'll get to catch them again sometime!

More than Music: Creative Merch and Promotions

There's no doubt that the tunes bring the fans to shows, but what keeps them coming back for more? How can bands ensure their fans will share their latest rockin' discovery with all of their friends? Sometimes it takes a little more than music. Here's where a bit of creativity and some great merch can make all the difference!

After choosing a name, recording a few songs, and playing a couple of shows, most bands take the next logical step and arm themselves with EPs and t-shirts to sell to the masses. Many even give out something small, like a button or a sticker, to potential fans for free to keep their name fresh in fans' minds. This is, indeed, one of the best ways to get your name out there! But some bands have forged their own path with regards to merch and advertising. Putting their creativity and ingenuity to good use, they've thrown a whole new spin on the idea.

My first true experience with merch tables and band promotions was at this year's Summer Side Show in Columbus, GA where I was lucky enough to be traveling with a band who were masters at the art. The very first thing Misfortune500 did when they arrived at the festival was set up a professional-looking merch tent complete with nicely arranged tables and well-displayed items for sale. After all, you've got to think big to make it big! Displays like these lend bands the illusion of great fame, and that really does wonders when you're playing for an unfamiliar crowd. They also took account of their audience for the festival. Hot weather? Well, then there's no better idea than selling water bottles with the band name on them! Other bands around the park also embraced the festival layout, guiding potential fans to their tents with signs and even writing messages on their friends' chests. Definitely eye-catching!

Here in Athens, I've seen some amazing promotional ideas as well. Several years ago, the Warm Fuzzies released their tunes on a bubblegum-scented CD. No fan is ever going to forget a band like that! I can vouch for the fact that, even weeks later, my friends and I could't get enough of telling our pals about them and letting them get a whiff of that sweet song-filled goodness.

Reptar, on the other hand, mixed it up in the early days with their t-shirts, making handmade pieces of one-of-a-kind art using just fabric paint and old clothes they'd found. Back when Allison Weiss lived here, she opted to go for printed t-shirts instead, but they certainly weren't any less memorable with sayings like "Allison Weiss is ok I guess." Ye Olde Sub Shoppe even went so far as to print headshots of one of their unwilling friends on their shirts. Having a sense of humor about their merch is an awesome way to keep the fans amused and excited!

Some bands step even further outside of the box when making their merch. Screamin Eagle, a soft indie pop band from Florida, sold small, hand-drawn books filled with the notions and themes they'd shared in their songs. It was such a unique move that you can bet I've never forgotten their show!

And hey, a band can even stand out in the way they sell their merch. Bambara and Misfortune500, among several other bands I've seen, have begun accepting credit cards at their shows as well. How is this possible? Well, all you need is an iPhone, a small addition to swipe cards, and an app to make your merch table into a legitimate portable business! You can't deny it. That is pretty cool!

Just remember, whether a band is selling sunglasses and beer koozies or earrings and bracelets, they should always make sure their fans leave with their minds full of unforgettable memories and their hands full of incredibly creative merch!

Echoreyn of Athens finally gets a Tumblr!

If you like to get your Athens music tidbits in picture and video form with the occasional blurb or unrelated whimsy sprinkled in, this one's for you!

You see, it recently came to my attention that the only thing missing in my life was a Tumblr account. Eager to fill this apparent hole in my existence, I naturally signed up for one right away. A few months later, I've decided that tumblr-ing (is that what they call it?) is actually kind of fun, so I thought I'd share my side blog with the rest of you cool kids too. Introducing Echoreyn of Athens: After Hours! It's like this blog but more casual, more laidback, and quite a bit more ridiculous. Don't be shy... Join the afterparty!

And hey, why just stop there? For even more playful Athens music tumblr-ing, I suggest you check out Athens Music Junkie's Tumblr too. Whenever I'm procrastinating, it's always one of my favorite hangouts, for sure.

Don't have a Tumblr? Well, luckily you don't need one to enjoy all of the insanity! And, as always, you can join us for more of our complete coverage of the scene on Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube too. Hope you're rockin' our town in every way that you can, my friends!

Athfest 2011: Bambara blows us a away and Lazer/Wulf rocks us back in

Saturday, June 25th, 2011
Bambara and Lazer/Wulf

Then, as fans crowded the courtyard outside of the Caledonia, it was time for the Dirty Athens party’s main event. BAMBARA! Playing their final show in Athens for a good while, they mixed it up a bit by rocking outdoors in the still-bright sunlight. What’s this insanity? In all the years that I’ve been a fan of the band, I’ve never actually been able to fully see the members as they immersed our ears in their sensual, noise rock blitz. In an effort to bring things back to normal, though, a leafy bush chose to obscure my view of the trio, making the whole event seem like it was taking place in some dense and untamed jungle. A rather perfect setting for their sound, I’d say! Their set included all of their newest hits as well as several beloved favorites. Then, much too soon, it was all over.

Now, I don’t generally fare too well when one of my favorite bands plays a final show, even if their goodbyes are by no means permanent. After all, the band will likely return to visit our little town on a regular basis to fill our ears with joy once more. Still, my anticipation and energy spent and my brain slightly addled by a mild case of the Athfest heat stroke I’ve come to know so well, I sat at one of Caledonia’s convenient little tables, nearly catatonic with exhaustion, for a few hours after their set.

On the bright side, this put me in the perfect position to hear Lazer/Wulf’s instrumentally-fueled metal tunes when they took the indoor stage a while later. Their massive strength of sound and their yells reverberated through the courtyard, even inspiring me to ease myself out of my comfortable position to see them in action. Inside, the venue was packed, and the warpaint-wearing band members were enlisting the crowd to sing along to one of their songs. It was quite a show!

Before I finish this entry, I’d just like to wish Bambara and each of its members more than the very best for their lives in Brooklyn. They have many amazing things ahead for them, of that I am absolutely certain!

The Noise Rules the Night: Bambara, Vincas, and Manray

The power emanating from the Caledonia Lounge this past Saturday night was truly something to behold. The three bands that gathered there to play for us were unequalled in their skill, and they took the stage as masters of their craft.

The first band to drive us wild were longtime favorites of the blog and veritable rulers of the noise rock scene, Bambara. As one of their final shows in Athens before their big move up to the NYC, they gave us a send-off nobody is likely to forget any time soon. Fully absorbed in their sound, with amazing energy that vibrated through the concrete floor to the core of every listener, they blasted us with their tunes. It was quite possibly the best show of theirs I've ever seen, and considering just how many times I've headed downtown to catch them in action, that's certainly saying something! Indeed, the guys rocking out beside me in the crowd were practically throwing fits from being in the mere presence of Blaze's mind-blowing drumming, Reid's incredible vocals and control of the piercing melodies, and William's intense mastery of the bass. The highlight of the night, though, was undoubtably their newest tune which, I am absolutely shocked to say, managed to outsex their hit Native Tongue for the title of most eargasmic song I've ever heard. Honestly, I didn't think it was possible to top that song, but holy geez, their latest tune was filled to the brim with sheer sexiness!

Following Bambara, Athens own Vincas gave us their dark and eerie take on the noise rock genre. I'd never heard these guys before, but their sound was pure quality. They were an excellent addition to the night's lineup!

Then it was Manray's turn to rule the stage. My pals have not been able to stop talking about the awesomeness that is this band, and now I fully understand why. The strength of their melodic hard and dark rock was absolutely brilliant, and though rather sparse by way of lyrics, their songs had a depth of sound that provided the perfect conclusion to the night. Best of all, these guys were rife with personality. Between tunes, they fed the crowd a bit of hilarious banter, and during the songs, they threw themselves into the music. Near the end of the set, bass player Ryan even tried to spontaneously crowd surf, leaping into the unsuspecting mob of fans before writhing around onstage. Enamored by their style, the crowd responded in turn, dancing wildly and even playing band member Jordan's guitar as he held it out for them. Such an insane lineup! It was quite a night!

Switching it up with Gringo Star and Sunspots

Explosive energy was the name of the game over at the Max Canada last night!

Featuring a brand new lineup of members, the guys of Sunspots bounced around the stage giving us a set of solid, upbeat indie rock. Seriously, their energy was downright shocking! The shoeless singer led the pack, literally leaping up and down during the songs to the great excitement of the crowd. Enthused by their wild spirit, the audience begged for more after they finished what seemed like the shortest set ever, and, most joyfully, they rewarded us with one final Sunspots tune.

Next it was time for Gringo Star to make its grand entrance. Apparently, these guys have been getting pretty big in Atlanta, and if their first impression is any indication of their general insane style, it doesn't surprise me in the least that the fans are buzzing about them. Honestly, I've never seen such a display of lasers, twinkling stars, epilepsy-inducing lights, and fog on that small a stage! I'll admit, in the beginning, all the blinking and flashing overpowered their tunes a bit; in such limited space, having every one of the senses engaged was quite overwhelming. Soon enough, though, I experienced their sound, and what a sound it was! To be honest, it's rather hard to find words to describe their style. If haunted carnival undertones flirted with an overarching hard rock influence inside a ball of pure energy, Gringo Star's tunes would feel right at home. And somehow, while these multitalented band members switched up instruments between every single song, they managed to give their entire set a cohesive sound. See what I mean when I call them indescribable? Truly both awesome and insane in a way I've never experienced before! And man, their energy was just contagious!

Then, as night eased into the wee morning hours, the ever-amazing blast of noise that is Bambara finished the show off with their spectacular set. If you've never read my blog before, let me just tell ya, my love for Bambara speaks for itself. What a wild night of tunes!

Tunes of love, loss, and truth

Happy Valentine's Day, dear readers of Athens and beyond! To show you just how much I love you, I thought I'd share some of my latest favorites among the songs of love, loss, and general debauchery given to us by some of our local bands. Today is a day made for tunes, after all! With the help of bandcamp.com, reverbnation.com, youtube.com, and ilike.com, here are a few treats for your ears. Enjoy!

For those in the throes of love and passion, readers of this blog may remember that my friends and I have deemed Bambara's tune Native Tongue the sexiest of them all. It's just undeniable! So, once more, I wish couples a fantastic night with this one.

Not looking for romance, but in need of a serious good time with no restrictions or conscience to bring you down? Well, then, Mud Scholar's amusing and ever-so-honest tune Man Slut Logic just might be your theme song!

Or maybe you've just had enough of the one you've been with lately. Don't worry! The Orkids have got your back on this one. You can burn all those old pictures and assert your independence to the tune of their hit Paper Dolls!

Perhaps you've got your eye on a new special someone, and you're in the mood to hit the dance floor together. If that's the case, the Beat Geeks' tune Deep Down is the song for you!

But what if your crush doesn't even have a clue how feel about them? Maybe he or she doesn't even know you exist. Well, the Athens band feels your pain, and they've put that frustration into rock with their hit She Don't Even Know, complete with an award-winning music video!

Now let's end on the highest of notes! Valentine's Day is, after all, a time to celebrate love, and the Orkids have got a song for us in that regard as well. I'll send you off with their gentle and touching melody Gold.

No matter what your situation is or how you choose to celebrate, hope you all have an amazing day!

xoxo

'Twas an Unbelievable Week

There's nothing like a three night explosion of tunes from a bunch of your favorite bands! I've been sleeping off the excitement for days now. Since I've already written loads on Dead Confederate, Bambara, Doctor Squid, and the Athens band, I thought I'd share some of my favorite video footage from their past shows with you instead.

Up first, we've got this lovely video of Dead Confederate performing their single, the Rat, at Athfest 2009.

Check out Bambara giving us a sexy taste of one of their hit tunes, Shake.

Everyone in the crowd sings along to Doctor Squid's massive favorite, On My Way!

And finally, here's the Athens band rocking a cover of Van Halen's And the Cradle Will Rock at Athfest 2010!

As always, you can check out the Echoreyn of Athens YouTube channel for more videos like these. Here's hoping the scene's got more weeks like this one in store for us soon!

And so it goes: Deaf Judges' final show with Bambara and Gift Horse

Purple fingers. Frozen. Searing pain. But sometimes even frostbite is worth it.

Truth be told, it seems that I have a penchant for attending Bambara shows in the throes of some wild illness or absurd medical problem. Remember that time I had swine flu? This time it just might be internal bleeding (and mild frostbite)... but no matter my ailment, this band manages to cure it all with their mad awesome skills every time. Indeed, I could write hundreds of pages on the righteous and rad rocking of Bambara (and probably have at this point), but I'll try to keep it short this time. Really, though, this band's music never ceases to transport me to an alternate universe. The chords, the yelling, the beats, the noise... I just can't get enough of their sound! And I'm not alone. They nearly blew the heads off my two friends who had never seen them before. Oh, these guys will always be among my top favorites!

Minutes later, Gift Horse set foot onstage to give us a bit of a softer take on the rock. Much more subdued than their Athfest show, this set featured a video of a classical composer projected on the wall behind them, quite like the very first show of theirs that I saw way back in the day. I've also gotta say that I just loved the basist's eyeless Mickey Mouse tee. Hey, I can't help it. I'm a sucker for unique fashions!

As the night crept beyond the midnight hour, it was Deaf Judges turn for their last hurrah. One of Athens' favorite hip hop/rap groups and winner of the Flagpole Athens Music Award in that category several years running, it could have been something of a tearful farewell. That not how the Judges wanted to go out, though! These guys have made a name for themselves with their insane antics and their beyond clever lyrics. Repetition really isn't their style. They've got wit down to an art form. I think one of the members said it best when, as the microphone crackled with static, he said that their words were so hot, they were blowing up the mic. Oh yeah!

These guys started off the night wearing sunglasses, bandanas, and hard hats, and that was only the beginning! One of the rappers hopped down into the middle of the crowd and dropped some lyrics right there as the fans danced around him. Then, as the band rapped its way through their tunes including a few blasts from the past, the members began throwing out what they called artifacts: old tees, signed records, and more. And the prizes just kept coming! Near the end of their set, the crowd got a hold of the bright Teddy Bear piñata that had hung over us throughout the show. Violently exuberant, the fans quickly dismembered the bear which rained candy all over the floor. One enthused crowd member even insisted on wearing the bear's skin as a hat as the Judges finished their set. As the fans bobbed and bounced, the Judges rapped through some of the most popular songs of the nineties before giving us one last taste of their original tunes. And then, it was over. What a show! Though the members will continue to share the beat through their other musical projects, Deaf Judges will undoubtably be missed!

Owning the stage: Tealvox, Athens, and Holdcell

Oh, city of Athens, why must you give me such unbelievable shows? Ever since my return to the music scene last week, I've struggled not to write about all of the amazing bands I've seen. You see, I try not to write too much about the same bands which is why I never mentioned the sheer awesomeness of Aman Amun + his live band or why I never even hinted about the fact that Bambara's newest song left me speechless for a whole minute. After tonight's show, though, I can't help myself. I just have to cave in and tell you about Saturday's Tealvox/Athens/Holdcell show.

Tealvox set the bar incredibly high with their polished rock sound as the night began. There's no doubt about it, these guys have definitely stepped up their game since I last saw them. Stage presence was the order of the night, and Cody, Phil, Michael, and Andy had it in droves. So impressive! It always amazes me that these guys continue to be so much better than bands years older than them. Best of all, they're working on some brand new songs. If you haven't checked them out yet, trust me, you need to give their tunes a listen.

Then it was Athens band's turn to rock. Talk about stage presence... I've never seen a band with as much energy as these guys have! The crowd
was with them the whole time, and they had their fans going crazy. There's no question that these kids belong on the stage. Following the success of their last music video for their tune "She Don't Even Know," they gave us a new pure rock version of the song to pump up the crowd before filming a brand new music video for their original song "Animals." I've gotta say, their originals are definitely my favorites. During the shoot, they had a giant inflatable monkey soaring over the crowd and dancing along to the tune in the arms of some of the fans. It was a madhouse! Then, to top off their set, they attempted to destroy an electric guitar onstage. It took some effort and a bit of jumping, but they finally succeeded in killing it, like so many kings of rock before them.

Now I have to admit I'm always skeptical of bands I've never seen before, especially bands that try to hold their own after two awesome first acts. Holdcell, though, knew just how to do it. Giving us some of the hardest of hard rock, those lucky audience members who stayed through the end were rewarded with a super loud but brilliant show. Hair was flying everywhere, and that was just from the Athens band whose members were rocking out to Holdcell in the front row. Word has it, this band is a big influence for the Athens guys, and I can see why. Their sound was all-encompassing. As far as stage presence goes, these guys were masters of the art. Emblazoned with a Holdcell tattoo, drummer Chuck Smith spun and threw his drumsticks in the air keeping the beat while Lee and Evan Hackney gave us their all on guitar and bass. So good! I would definitely love to see them again. What a show!
